About The Department
Year of Establishment: 1988
Geography was introduced as a subject of undergraduate programme in Kalipada Ghosh Tarai Mahavidyalaya, Bagdogra in the year 2003 and seeing the mounting interest of the students, Honours Course was introduced in 2005. The department now has four teaching faculties and one non-teaching faculty who constantly guide the students in the theory, practical and survey projects. The Department started with offering General Degree courses of three-year B.A Programme & B.A/B.Sc Honours and has adopted Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in the year 2018. NEP20 has started from 2023.The full dedication of the faculty members to the Department of Geography has been providing the quality of education to the students. As a result, the success rate of passing out students has been increasing gradually year to year. The Department inhouse its own Departmental library, a good Geography Lab for the students and teachers to promote uninterrupted learning beyond classroom. The Department organizes excursions for Part III Honours (old system) and 4th Semester Honours (new CBCS) students to various parts of the country every year so that students learn how to relate theory with facts and exposure to new places helps the students to develop a perspective which they would not have attained otherwise. A few Excursion Locales for the past few years include Dehradun, Agra, Jaipur, Dui, Mumbai, Goa, Puri, Shillong, Sunderbans, North Sikkim etc. The Department is also a Nodal Centre for IIRS-ISRO Outreach Programme since 2020. Any student/ Faculty of KGTM or any other institute can register in the Programmes and get certificate after successfully completing the course. No course fee is required for it.
It is a conviction that students are capable of creative thinking. To encourage the creativity in the students and also enable them to think critically, project writing was made compulsory component of the curriculum. The students benefit immensely from their research work. This also enables them to become an independent thinker which stands them in good stead once they finish their graduation. The faculty members are always ready to guide the students with their curriculum, analytical and other socio economic activities, helping them in attaining goals and jobs in various fields. The results are palpable as students get through various national; and international institutions of higher education on the basis of competitive examination. Their achievements are bringing recognition to the department.
The department is making every effort to establish itself in a way where students not only enrich themselves but also stand out in whichever field they wish to pursue.

Department rules
- Students have to abide by the rules and regulations imposed by the college.
- Students have to abide by the Departmental rules and regulations.
- As per NEP 2020, and CBCS rules 15 marks will be internal, which is based on the class attendance (05) and internal evaluation cum classroom performance (10). So students are advised to follow the instructions provided by the HOD from time to time.
- Internal scores for the attendance part shall be awarded in the following manner: (i) 90% & Above - 5 marks, (ii) 85% & above but below 90% - 4 marks, (iii) 80% & above but below 85% - 3 marks, (iv) 75% & above but below 80% -2 marks.
- As per NEP 2020 rules imposed by UGB, students with attendance less than 75% are not eligible to appear in the final examination.
- Participation in field work for SEM-IV Honours and SEM-VI Honours (CBCS) courses is mandatory for all.
- It is mandatory for all students under NEP 2020 to participate in the ‘Term Paper/ Project’ preparation.
- Students have to participate in departmental activities like special lectures, workshops, model exhibitions, seminars and other cultural and academic activities of the department.
- Appearing in Class Tests/Internal Assessment is mandatory.
- Students have to inform HOD or other teachers in case of continuous absence from the class for more than three consecutive days.
- Students have to issue and submit instruments and lab materials within due time without any physical damage or missing components. They must enter their name in the register at the time of issuance of instruments.
- Students have to submit books borrowed from the departmental library within 7 days and they must enter their name in the register at the time of issuance of books.
- Students are instructed to switch off lights and fans before leaving the classroom.
Distinctiveness
The Department has well equipped lab with all the available instruments for surveying, mapping for the students . The class room are synchronised with hands on training sessions for student’s learning QGIS software and data analysis. Every student takes part in the field work and preparation of Field Report/ Project. Department regularly organises special lectures, alumni lectures, student seminars, freshers and farewells and publishes wall magazines for all round development of students. The faculty members have been incessantly involved in writing research papers in their areas of expertise and help the students with their knowledge. Message From HOD
Welcome to the Department of Geography of Kalipada Ghosh Tarai Mahavidyalaya. I am glad to announce that the Department of Geography is one of the most successful Departments of this college with Three Full Time Assistant Professors along with one highly qualified State Aided College Teacher ( SACT) and one Lab Attendant. All the faculties are competent enough to teach the undergraduate students following CBCS and NEP 2020 CURRICULUM. We provide both theory and practical classes on regular basis for developing the knowledge and skill of students. We have well equipped lab with all the available instruments for surveying, mapping for the students and the class room are synchronised with hands on training sessions for student’s learning QGIS software and data analysis. We have one ICT enabled classroom in general where we take our students regularly for audio visual classes which are taken using computer, projector and internet by different faculties. Students have practical experience of the subject through Field visit, excursion, model exhibition. Students of our department participate actively in student seminar, model & poster competition, quiz competition, group discussion and Debates. We also organize Special lectures and Alumni lectures for deep understanding of topics for students. For better student teacher communication & sharing of knowledge we use Google classroom & social media like whatsapp, youtube etc. Smart teaching- learning system through modern facilities and tools are used in the Department.
