About The Department

The Department of Environmental Sciences is a newly constituted department at Kalipada Ghosh Tarai Mahavidyalaya, Bagdogra, Darjeeling. The Department was established to teach one semester interdisciplinary compulsory course on Environmental Studies after the University Grants Commission’s mandate in 2014-15. After the introduction of Choice Based Credit System in 2017-18 this paper became two credits, AECC (Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course) for students. Students enrolled at the college were required to study and appear for this paper in the first semester of their academic year. Later on, after the introduction of Four Years Under Graduate Program-2022 (FYUGP) as per NEP in the year 2023-24, this paper was called Environmental Education, VAC (Value Added Course) carried four credits. Students enrolled at the college were required to study and appear for this paper either in the first or second semester of their academic year

Environmental Education course at Kalipada Ghosh Tarai Mahavidyalaya aims to provide students with the extent of understanding environmental issues. It is done through integrated, problem-oriented study with fieldwork. It is an interdisciplinary compulsory course with an objective to create environmental awareness among students of all disciplines. The college  faculties with wide-ranging expertise and background in the subject teach the course.

The Department of Environmental Science develops interests among students in a number of areas, including ecology; energy resources; biodiversity; conservation; pollution; waste management; environmental policy and practices; human communities and environment and global climate change.

The mission of the Department of Environmental Science is to advance understanding of the Earth’s systems and the impacts of human activity on the environment. Through innovative teaching, and meaningful engagement with communities, our department seeks to develop solutions to pressing environmental challenges. We are committed to producing graduates who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to address complex environmental issues and contribute to building a more sustainable future. Additionally, we strive to serve as a resource for policymakers, industry leaders, and the public, promoting evidence-based decision-making and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.

Department Rules

A candidate to be eligible for appearing at any of the semesters of UNDER-GRADUATE Examination must have a minimum 75% attendance of lectures delivered. Award of 05 (five) marks on class attendance shall be given in the following manner:
The evaluation of the students will be a continuous process and will be based on their performances in Internal Assessment and the Semester End Examination. All the internal continuous evaluations will be conducted by the Teachers of the Department. It will be on the basis of a combination of Mid Term Tests and Report on Field Work, spread over the entire period of study. The Internal Assessment marks will be communicated to the Examination Branch of the University.

We offer a diverse array of programs designed to meet the needs of students at various stages of their academic careers like Value Added Course (VAC) – Environmental Education,Multidisciplinary Course (MDC) – Sustainable Development, Add-on Course (32-hours) – Sustainable Development.
